Living Like Weasels Rhetorical Analysis In her essay â€Å"Living Like Weasels†, Annie Dillard explores the idea of following a single calling in life, and attaching one’s self it this calling as the weasel on Ernest Thompson Seton’s eagle had. Dillard presents her argument using the analogy of a weasel and how the; â€Å"weasel lives as he’s meant to, yielding at every moment to the perfect freedom of single necessity† (Dillard). In constructing her argument, however, she often contradicts herself undermining the effectiveness of her argument and leaving the reader confused. Dillard primarily uses ethos and pathos to support her argument and concerning both, the reader discovers; inconsistencies in her character, and conflicts between her perceptions of the weasel’s emotions and its actions. Concerning her ethos, Dillard presents herself as a part of suburbia and then is suddenly, inexplicably overcome by the desire to live wild. Dillard als o uses very detailed language throughout the essay in describing her surroundings and thoughts, however; this further undermines her argument and ethos as she is trying to convince the reader that she could simply become as simple and single minded as the weasel she has focused her argument around. With her use of pathos, Dillard begins her essay with descriptions of the weasel’s brutality, yet; she concludes by stating the weasel lives as is necessary. The roles of women in society have always been a topic for debate. Some think women should be in the kitchen cooking meal and having lots children. Others feel that women can contribute to society in ways that are not a part of the family home, but outside the in board rooms and operating rooms. This paper is going to argue how chauvinistic thoughts of women helped propel the female gender into great spies during the civil war. During the era of the civil war attitudes of women spying during a war was unheard of; women are often over looked as valuable associates in war efforts. Keeping American united was the reason the Civil War started. The country of America was created from British explores venturing out to find more about the earth. When some of the explores reach what is now the United States they decided to settle and put down roots. The British wanted to remain over the newly explored land but the settler came together to defeat the British. Years later after the country began to operate under its own government an issue arose, slavery. Slavery was a major factor in the civil war, it was not the only factor that started the War but it was a major one. During this time role between men and women were very distinct. Men went out and hunted for food and built things around the homestead. When the civil War began men were leaving by the droves to become Soldier in the War. Both side of the war started to draft men from the ages of 20 to 45. The unmarried men w and aliens expressed interest in becoming citizens participated in the draft. After all of the unmarried men the married men were drafted. Some men did not wait for the draft they signed up to fight voluntarily. This left a lot of women at home to pick up where husbands, brothers, and fathers left off. During this era men and woman was bound by Victorian codes that were strict on what they can and cannot do. Competition for a place as a  functional member of society is increased, as well as the competition with other societies to increase the capital to support a large society and fuel a progressive economy. Also, science provides us with a sense that there is â€Å"proof†, or factual evidence for the otherwise unexplained. Science and technology has created many new machines for example machine gun, tanks , smoke gas and many more which helped nations to fight and win the war without having to loss many solders due to planes travel faster and carry heavy bomb loads. Technology made transportation easier and faster for better transportation for goods and services. Science has also made life easier building elevators and developing of internal steel skeletons to bear weight of buildings and many more building to make life easier for the people to live. Science had taken traditional and modern ideas. The first human to step on the moon. Another better controversy highlights the growing rift between traditional and modern ideas.
